Motherboard manufacturers usually make their boards with cheap capaitors with a lower tolerance than maxiimum allowed to cut costs. If a person able to dissassemble and reassemble their PC and able to use a soldering iron, they can remove and replace the capacitors that are available in electronic surplus stores. They are not expensive, usually $1-3 each. A good name to buy is Nichicon. The worst PC I came across was a 3 yr old HP with 7 blown capacitors. All was well after the fix.
gah. gay bastards. it turns out the reason why i couldnt shut off my computer anymore was due to microsofts latest update.... it somehow blocks the normal shut down sequence.. had to sys restore.. freaking bastards.
Agreed. It definitely sounds like a heat issue. Open your case up with the computer running to see if all the fans are spinning. Make sure the CPU heatsink/fan is clean and operational. Also, download Speedfan and keep an eye on the temperature. What kind of processor do you have? We can tell you the safe temperature zone for your specific processor.
good idea with the program speedfan to monitor the temperature. also, to dann, i know what u mean, thats why i don't get microsoft updates unless they are big ones cos then most of the bugs on their updates are then fixed.
thanks for all your replies, i have checked the overheating prob, its not that. Neither is it blown caps becos the motherboard is still in pristine condition. Dust have been cleaned, the RAM looks very new. The most likely prob is the HDD. A fd told me continuous DL for months-years ruin the HDD that windows is on together, esp trnts. he said using an ext/portable HDD will be the solution. To use my computer again properly, i had to reformat & reinstall windows XP, sacrificing some of my video & lot of programs which i didnt hv time to backup with so much data & i dont hv an ext HDD :( now i feel like having to start all over again. maybe using less programs will be a good thing...
i have been using BT for going on 2 years continuously and my HDDs have no problems, but hey so many things can go wrong with windows its almost impossible to tell sometimes
there's your problem right there.. -lol or prolly all those software caught a virus... and BT will damage your harddrive.... maybe got some bad sectors on the drive too..
ok many reasons can be the problem that your computer is restarting.. i mainly thing that its your power supply. if the power supply isnt giving enough wattage to the components the computer will restart itself... so if thats the case my recommendation would be... buy a bigger psu =] i believe 1200 wattage should be enough xD but it might make your lights in your house flicker... LOL and many people keep saying its your hard drive... im not so sure that the hard drive would make your computer restart but if you think there is bad sectors on your hard drive follow this and you can clear up those bad sectors. click start/run. type in cmd and press enter. then you get a popup called CPrompt. in cprompt type in chkdsk c: /f and press enter it will say something about the drive being used currently and if you want it to boot at next time you restart. hit y and then hit enter. then type in exit and restart computer. when your computer is restarting, it will do a checkdisk scanning your harddrive for bad sect ors and it will fix those sectors for you . let me know if this helps. =] wow.. never typed this much for a reply before xP btw i highly doubt its a virus... unless you been watching too much of those porn thingys..
I've had this problem before. It's most likely the motherboard is fried. I had an HP computer as well, and I recently purchased a Gateway. It's working a lot smoother than the HP. A new PC will do the job [:
ive done the check disk beforehand & theres nothing wrong with the HDD sectors. my motherboard has no problems either. Now the restart problem has ceased so far after reformatting, reinstalling XP. What my friend says is that BT DLing will actually damage the internal HDD if that is the destination. He suggests only DLing to an ext HDD or USB drive which will avoid this. So far my computer after reformatting 3days ago is now much better, losing the weight of all the programs i previously had. what i want to know is to confirm the BT Dling will cause damage to HDD myth?
i don't think it does tbh. why would that damage ur hdd. what it does is use it which is what a hdd is designed to do. i think the problem was the fact that u installed vista ultimate and then reverted back. i think that caused some errors and conflicts and caused ur computer to restart. also u sed that there are nothing wrong with the hdd sectors which already suggest that there isn't any problems with the hdd.
Sounds like a ram issue. Too much stress on 512mb.There's a small chance it could also be ur CPU being pushed beyond its limit. Either way doing a reformat using XP and use just the basic applications should solve the problem cause it sounds like you're running gigs worth of apps and OS with only 512mbs. No good can come of that. I wouldn't say it's overheating because my sister has an HP desktop and when it overheated the pc shuts off. It doesn't reboot at all. Just shuts off and the pc wouldn't turn back on right away even when we pressed the power button.
@nerdyviet ok if the motherboard is fried.... it wouldnt be able to boot up and if it was fried... you would smell a little bit of burning =] @popazn i doubt bt destroys the hard drive. my friends and i torrent ALOT and nothing seems to have happened to our hard drives yet. btw i currently use an hp. @p3ps1c0la it wouldnt be ram... his computer instantly restarts itself. if his computer lacked ram it would freeze up a little first or you would hear a loud grinding noise cause it would be using the hard drive to run whatever hes doing and then he would get blue screen of death so it shouldnt be ram. but i do think its hardware problem
I used to be into OCing and when I pushed the ram too much during testing with heavy load the PC reboots. Just shuts down and reboots. I'm aware that memory failure can lead to BSOD but it can also lead to sudden reboots and this is from experience.
lol sorry p3ps1c0la dont take my words to be offensive.. you seem offended =x and one question... popazn does your computer still restart on its own now after you formatted?
well he sed its working fine now and i take that its still working fine if he hasn't posted anything here. so ye i guess it was vista ultimate i reckon that caused the problem. i don't think u supposed to install vista ultimate with just 512mb of ram anyway.
