anyone on PA using vista with a flash mem stick for readyboost? a 2 gig stick is 15 dollars now and im debating whether its worth buying. has anyone seen any performance gains with this? :sp_ike_d:
Performance gains when you have over 1GB of ram is minimal, and over 2GB it'll be almost nonexistant. Your sysetm would really only be noticeable quicker when you have less than 1GB of ram installed. Paraphrased from various anecdotes. =P
I'm running 1Gb SD card (870Mb allowance) with Ready Boost. It helps when you're multitasking. that's about it.
Accoring to Microsoft, the Vista is able to run at a bare minimum of 512MB of ram while 1GB is recommended. The point is, systems that have insufficient ram (as in, can't run the OS optimally) will usually use the hardisk to cache a lot of data (be it the pagefile or w/e). Since flash memory is solid state and such does not really need to seek, it'll be effectively faster to cache to. The more ram you have, you'll usually have less disk space reserved for caching; therefore, minimal performance gains. Oh, right. Apparently for the upcoming SP1, Readyboost may supposively be modified so that your USB Readyboost drive will have data populated in a different way, such that the sleep/hibernate process for laptops will be faster/more responsive.
u don't even need to buy anything, just use a usb stick that ur not currently using. though i've never found a need to use it and don't rele see much of a difference anyway. my comp runs pretty smooth when im using it.
You have to have a memory stick that is ReadyBoost Ready/Certified. If Autoplay pops up, under General Options, select Speed up my system, then select "Use this device" and select the amount of space for the Ready Boost. If it doesn't pop up, go to your properties of your memory stick in Computer, then select the ReadyBoost tab, and select "Use this device" and select the amount of space for the Ready Boost.
rele i dunno whether my usb sticks are readyboost certified but the sign still comes up. not that i use readyboost anyway
