as long as they are not the well known brands such as toshiba, if they are like lg the prices of some laptops can be rele quite attractive. especially at christmas time. they throw a bunch of other stuff too.

don't get a dell cos they aren't very reliable. tbh the apple is decently priced compared to the other comps but if u don't already have a mac it may take some time to get used to it and stuff like that. but if u want a decent laptop spec and don't mind the size. pcworld has the hp one for £499 for 2gb of ram and stuff. its a bargain rele for its spec and the reason why its gone down in price is cos of the size cos not many ppl rele want 17inch laptops. so if u don't mind then u can get that. alternatively just get an hp cos they are pretty reliable and remember to stay away from brands such as acer etc. personally i recommend hp as they have gd build quality compared to others. if u don't mind spec too much and care for size u should be able to get a 12.1 inch for about £650. its a tablet pc by hp and though it only comes with 1gb of ram that is enough for usual stuff and the high cost is due to the size and portability of it as well as the ability for the screen to become a tablet.

Bought an $799 HP laptop for my wife. 17 inch Centrino Duo Core, 250GB HD, webcam, wireless G, DL DVD burner, 2gb DDR2. Originally I wanted to get her a smaller laptop but hey, the price was alright.

I was particularly impressed with dl speeds. It managed to go over 600kbps.

Don't get the powerbook. DO NOT GET THE POWERBOOK.

    Going on:
Depends on your OS preferences. Have you ever used the Mac OS before? If you had and you're sure that you're ready to switch from Windows to Mac then go ahead. As for Dell they are cheaper and have pretty good support if you ever run into any major problems. If you're unsure I would go with the Dell instead of switching to a different OS.

BTW any ideas what Dell laptops you're looking at? The Inspiron series, or the XPS series?

    DO NOT GET THE POWERBOOK

For £700 (1,381 US $) - £800 (1,578 US$), getting a dell xps 1530 is a good pick. solid performace, sleek appearance and a reasonable price. plenty of customizable options.

your friend tryin to rip you off with the powerbook or something lol...you could freaking get a laptop with a face scanner and webcam and such for like $600 us, powerbook for $1000+ lol, thats funny. that is seriously a cardboard box. If you want dell get the xps m1530 or the xps m1330 in your price range. dunno about UK, but in the U.S. you can pretty much customize a xps m1530 to ultra good specs for $1500 if you don't play games you can even get it for less lol. If you get the g4 for that price i would laugh that is a old laptop, does not even use dual core, it is slooowwwwww....could probably get something better than that for like $300-$400 US or less now i think.

Sony has some decent ones on their website at the moment. Size/ performance/ price are not bad.

The powerbook is the laptop for apple before the Macbook even existed. I'm not 100% sure it can run OS X leapord smoothly and it doesn't have the intel core duo chips.

seems ok but for that price -lol how long did he said he get that....probably 512mb of ram and such for over 1k in us common, even for 500 i wouldn't buy it...laptops at 1k us right now comes with 4X the RAM and like 3X the HD space and also the processor is like 2X faster and wayyy more energy efficient. DON'T buy the cardboard box, buy a laptop lol... Oh yea didn't he tell you the specs cause that powerbook can be worst than i'm thinking like it can have a 500+mhz processor, i don't know anything on the market this low nowadays, even a $200 notebook would've own that now.

Big name brands like Dell, HP(Compaq), Toshiba, Acer have pretty much the same internals. I work in a contracting company that manufactures PC, laptops, telecommunications hardware, even the XBOX360; so I have firsthand knowledge of vendor parts, circuit boards, cpus, etc.
For peace of mind, figure out your budget and what you're going to use it for to determine the specs. The above mentioned brands are all fine, just don't go for any laptop whose prices are too good to be true, refurb or obscure brands (MDG for example).

i have a hp btw and it works fine for me so dunno about what u've heard. also don't get the powerbook cos its quite old now and for 100 pounds more u can get a brand new macbook which prob has better spec than that. also if going for a laptop with vista then u need 1gb of ram preferebly if not more and a 100gb hard drive at least especially if ur spending £700 then u would want prob more hard drive space and more ram. also, for a windows based laptop u want a decent graphics card that comes with it.

if u plan on running Vista, i really do not suggest anything less than 2GB of ram regardless of what you plan to do with your laptop/desktop/anything... schoolwork, gaming, work.... ANYTHING get atleast 2GB of ram... Vista hogs just way too much ram... if u must... i mean absolutely must run Vista... 1.5GB BARE Minimum...

if ur running XP, anything with 1GB will be fine... that's actually pretty standard now... 1GB of ram and 80GB+ HDD are rather standard now...

well u don't rele see many laptops with more than 2gb of ram these days and 1gb of ram runs fine with it if its vista premium. its only on ultimate would i say u need 2gb at least.
