Some of my Korean friends just came back from Korea, and I heard that if you go back there, people are very open about what they think of your looks. If they think you are ugly, they will go up to you can say it to your face. In public, you can get openly teased for being just a little overweight.

Is this true? And if so, do you think this is a trend in Asian countries or just Korea? I know that in China, they pay particular attention to your weight..

I dont know about Korea, but in China, no one cares about how you look.

yeah, definitely not true in china, there are some pretty ugly peeps there.

but korea is a place where plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancements are as normal as anything, so yeah, the standards might be different.

lol, I don't know about Korea or China, but I was in Vietnam a few months ago and my sister and I were shopping for some clothes. Well, my sister is a size 6 in the US, and when we came into the store, the lady came right up to my sister and said, "Sorry, we don't have your size". -noclue So yeh....I think the "weight" thing is true and more so prevalent in Asian countries.

Technically I'm South Korean, but have lived in a lot of different places including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Seoul, and various parts of the US. From my experience I have to say that of all the groups of people I have grown up amongst, none are so critical of physical appearance and so RUDE about it as the South Koreans. They are competitive in every aspect and looks are no exception. Adults and elders are always commenting on teenage girls' appearances - it is so annoying, and gets very boring. [IMG] Personally, I find this behavior very unclassy and crude. I just got SO sick of it! If they think I got prettier, they will say so, even though I never even asked and really don't care to hear their opinions, and if they think I got fat, they will say so, even though I'm not even remotely close to overweight by US/medical standards. In fact, I'm considered slightly below average. I swear, in my experience, only South Koreans have been tactless enough to talk about someone's weight so unabashedly to the person's face. [IMG] I have an American greencard right now but will be applying for American citizenship this fall, because there's no way in hell I am going back to my messed up homeland - at least not for a looooong time! In Taiwan they care about appearance too, but nowhere near the extent that S. Koreans do.

I had some cousins who, after graduation, moved back to Seoul. Now they're all talking about getting plastic surgery, because they say that life is really hard over there if you don't have that Korean barbie-doll look. And If a girl is even slightly overweight, men will call her "fatso" like it's her name, even though she's a nice person. I've seen it happen.

I hope this answers your question a little, Sandy.

Normal people usually just keep it to themselves if they see ugly people. The people in korea are just the same. Maybe the ones who are daring enough to call others ugly are just the out-of-place ones.

guy calls girl ugly - girl gets plastic surgery - girl looks pretty - girl calls other girls ugly - other girls get plastic surgery... its cyclical

well after reading all that, i am NUMBER 1 NOT going to korea lol.
number 2 NEVER buying clothes in any asia store.
number 3 HAVE some knuckledusters on me ready to punch anyone daring enough to say to me anything negative about my appearance, cause quite frankly, you dont ask for it, so dont bother giving it without expecting some kind of response.
