Two long but interesting articals about the lack of regulation and the corruption in both private companies and the chinese government in China. One deals with coughing medicine and a certain car cooler chemical in Panama and tainted dog food in the United States and the other deals toothpaste imported to the the Carribeans. My point here is that although some Chinese drug companies that are unethical are using the lack of regulation in the Chinese gov't to produce drugs that are potentially fatal, the Chinese gov't should really increase oversight to international standards. Again I not saying all Chinese drug companies are doing this, only some so no flaming and no this is not a term paper for a class and I'm not using yo'all as my gunea pigs. It's simply chinese drugs awareness, seriously though. NYTIMES From China to Panama, a Trail of Poisoned Medicine IN CHINA At least 18 people, most of them in Guangdong Province, died in a month last year after they ingested contaminated medicine. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/06/w...00c2cf27e733d035&ex=1180152000&pagewanted=all ___________________________________________________________________________________ BBC News Toothpaste is the latest Chinese export to raise safety concerns China probes 'tainted' toothpaste http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6684563.stm Summary Some industrial chemical usually used to make antifreeze was manufactured by a company and some bad business men in china bought and resold it with intent to mislable it as a syrup to be used to make drugs. These chemicals were then transferred to another shipping company which then sold it to a Chinese government subsidary drug wholesaler and then the wholesaler sold it to some company in Spain. In Spain which then sold it to the government of panama to make cold medicine. The cold medicine contains the chemical used to make antifreeze which is toxic to the nervous system. Some people started dying after taking the drugs. Non of the firms above had tested the chemicals. The most definitive test should have came from the chinese gov't subsidiary wholesaler, but they simply slapped on a sticker that said it was 100% glycerin, when in fact it was 100% antifreeze chemical compound. And finally we see that people in Australia and the Dominican Republic that uses the toothpaste brand Excel and Mr. Cool with the same chemical as in anti-freeze are being sold and some people have been affected. Any amounts of this antifreeze chemical leads to "The kidneys fail first. Then the central nervous system begins to misfire. Paralysis spreads, making breathing difficult, then often impossible without assistance. In the end, most victims die." The chinese are "investigating" and have arrested the man who sold made the mislabeled the chemicals initially. But it's an industry wide practice in china that's been going on for many years. They replace the real syrup with the antifreeze chemical in order to save money because they are similar and is hard to distinguish. There was also a previous massive pet recall of food in the U.S. after pet food(not containing the same chemical) killed some animals. So moral of the story is don't buy Excel and Mr. Cool toothpaste. And a suggestion for tougher regulation in chinese industries.
Here's more to the story. From the sounds of these Chinese businessmen it seems that they've been using the main chemical common for anti-freeze in toothpaste made in China for a while now. Moral of the story=Don't buy imported Chinese toothpaste http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/22/b...hpaste.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print
DANYANG, China, May 21 — Chinese authorities are investigating whether two companies from this coastal region exported tainted toothpaste as more contaminated product, including some made for children, has turned up in Latin America. A team of government investigators arrived here Sunday afternoon and closed the factory of the Danyang City Success Household Chemical Company, a small building housing about 30 workers in a nearby village, according to villagers and one factory worker. The government also questioned the manager of another toothpaste maker, Goldcredit International Trading, which is in Wuxi, about an hour’s drive southeast of here. No tainted toothpaste has been found in the United States, but a spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration said yesterday that the agency would be taking “a hard look” at whether to issue an import alert. Authorities in the Dominican Republic said they seized 36,000 tubes of toothpaste suspected of containing diethylene glycol, an industrial solvent and prime ingredient in some antifreeze. Government investigators arrived here just days after customs officials in Panama said that they had discovered diethylene glycol in 6,000 tubes of toothpaste. The toothpaste was being sold under the English brand names Mr. Cool and Excel. There have been no reports of deaths tied to toothpaste containing the chemical. thats all i needed to know
yeah if you read the earlier post there has been deaths related to the same anti-freeze as in the chemical you pour into your car in drugs in Panama. And this chemical has been used in Chinese toothpastes as a way for manufacturers to save money so no chinese toothpaste and maybe drugs
Are those chinese drug companies so desperate to make $$$ that they don't have good quality control or use cheap alternatives ??
the chemical 'diethylene Glycol' is used in all anti-freeze lol. I had to make it in chemistry class. apparently its not so deadly to humans in small amounts, and tastes kind of sweet.
Oh so that's why they substitute it. I was thinking of a blant tasting chemical. So if it's sweet then this industrial solvent can be substituted for pharmacy grade syrup. Yeah high amounts leads to "The kidneys fail first. Then the central nervous system begins to misfire. Paralysis spreads, making breathing difficult, then often impossible without assistance. In the end, most victims die." What a bunch of Mo Liang Fu Shuen.
^ i thought that it was only a short article at the beginning, then i was like WTH? so Don, be nice and summarize for me. -innocent

^Thanks for the summary Veincentury. It's always the same story, the Chinese government should regulate their industries stricter etc etc. They just don't care much about lives, as long the products make profits it's ok. Or maybe that IS their policy; don't regulate the industry and safety procedures so more people will risk their lives but it would solve another problem for the government: overpopulation...-what?
Yeah like I said earlier mo liang fu shuen - People that will neglect their legal, ethcial, and social responsibilities just to make more money. And this has been going on for a while; some people prob. died of it in china and their families prob. thought they died from natural diseases. So sad.
its what happens when a country that had so little money suddenly becomes the trade centre of the world people want money and lots of it, people will do anything, cheat, scam, kill, lie
scary. considering how many products are made in China though, the not-buying-imported-things-from-China is pretty hard to avoid.
