If the humans disappeared from the face of the Earth, will the world be better off? Some people say we are parasites. Others say we are defenders of the planet. But what do you guys think? Are we sinners or saints?

I think most think too highly of the human race.
Humans are just a link of the ecochain, the balance of some ecosystems may be upset by the disappearence of human beings, but Earth will eventually recover and prospere without human intervention.
However, human beings do thing with abandon (like reproduce? *wink wink*) deplete or contaminate many resources on Earth, lead to mass extiniction and such.
So I am all for Earth better off without humans. I totally see no reason to think we as human beings defends the planet, since the problems most likely will not arise if it wasn't for us in the first place.

Probably because we're doing more harm than actually helping out the earth. Look million and million of years agon humans didn't exist.

I think we are just one of the spieces on earth. In the old days of the past, before the 1st human existed, there are other animals living as well.

So I dont see the point here...

The point is that we are the first species to directly alter the face of the earth for unnatural reasons, like...

    1. Preservation. Most people don't realize this, but preserving species goes against evolution.
    2. Terraforming. This destroys the ecology so that we may live comfortably.
    3. Hunting, fishing, and cultivating. By selectively consuming certain species contrary to their actual role in an ecosystem, we're majoring screwing things over.

Sure the Earth would be more natural without us, but where would the fun be if you or I didn't exist. If there's no one around to witness how great the earth is without humans, then what's the point? None of us would be on this board talking about how green the Earth is or how much gloabal warming has subsided in our absence.

    life

On this planet the most enduring and successful organisms are the ones which are most basic and simple micro-organisms. They would still be around after we are long gone. Human being is a very vulnerable life form, we are also biologically weak in the evolution as we are just one single species! Many mammals have different species which are adapted to different environments and have greater chance of survival!

I would say yes, we are not end all and be all.
the world could easily adapt without humans, actually i sometimes think the world would do better without humans.

defenders of the planet? I think we do everything but defend it... I don't see why the earth wouldn't be able to make due w/out humans.. we weren't around when the Dinosaurs were.. unless you believe our ancestors date back to the dinosaurs...

  12. We all gonna get wiped out when more Frilled Sharks.. and whos knows what kinda sea creatures come to land... Land Vs Sea...

    better start growing gills..

we're just another set of animals
and who just happened to learn to adapt faster than the rest
so it seems like we rule

we dont die off as fast as the rest of the animals since we are willing to kill them off even when not nessary

we're the only other animal (besides dophins) who have sex for fun, even though other animals have orgasms too

course it can cuz humans doesn't exist way before and even if we disappear, the world will still turns. like dinosaur, they disappear and it wasn't the end afterall

Dolphin is even smarter, their two hemisphere of brain doesn't idle or take breaks even when they sleep, unlike us lowly humans.

Without Humans, I think the world will be a better place for the rest of the animal kingdom. There will be no more killing of ecosystems, since Humans are a major cause to the destruction of ecosystems.

But then again, this is a rhetorical question, so I do not really know

yes it would. remember, this world was here before humans were. The world was living. No pollution, nothing.
Human only pollutes the earth and the o zone layer.
If the world was never with humans, the environment today would be a nice as a fairy tale story. no worries that one day the world would be full of trash.

Our brain "idles" to save energy and infact the dolphins are the second smartest species on earth, not first.

The human brain is the most complex brain of all known species on earth. Some of you may know and some may not but in a normal human being only about 10 percent of the brain is actually used/unlocked. So the potential of the human brain is unknown.

As for the topic, I think the earth would be better off without humans given our species history up untill this point.

hhmm .. when i first read the title; i thought to myself, this should be a question like the, "if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it make a sound?". or something about that. never would have thought about sinners or saints or machines taking over (Terminator3)
