I look at this forum, forums at Baidu, AsianFanatics, and other Chinese forums, and I realize, people tend to admire certain celebrities because of their beauty or sexiness or whatever. However in Hollywood, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jack Nicolson, Edward Norton are the ones who get admired because of their amazing acting skills. Even pretty boys such as Leonardo Dicaprio and Johnny Depp made their transition from pretty boys to serious actors. People like Chad Michael Murray and Lindsay Lohan are considered nothing but teen idols that teenyboppers enjoy fawning over. So the question is: are Asian people way too shallow, only caring about looks? All the popular people in China are the good-looking ones, such as Edison Chen, Daniel Wu, Cecilia Cheung, Ruby Lin, Ron Ng, Liu Yi Fei, Jimmy Lin and a lot of other people. You rarely see average-looking people get popular, though they may have a lot of talent. Also on this forum, all people discuss about on the actors/actresses are how attractive they are, rather than what talents they have. What's your opinion on this?
"So the question is: are Asian people way too shallow, only caring about looks?" ... "all people" ... My opinion is stop lableling everyone as a group. I'm not one of "these" so called people you are talking about, and nor is other people on the forum I have seen. I think your judgement is impared by inaccuracy and bias towards the oriental cultre. I also don't see facts backing this up, nor do I see the point in this post lol =p. "All the popular people in China" hmm I know some good actors in china who don't fit your criteria as "attractive". I think you need to look outside the box on this one... or in your case outside the asian forums to see the truth. I have seen on alot of forums regarding North American actors all the time, saying there hot/pretty/attractive/sexy and what not and they aren't even good at acting and there still popular. Your point seems useless lol. I'm not trying to be mean or anything but thats the truth.
there are still a handful of celebrities known more for their talents than their looks. take David Tao, JJ Lin, and Chapman To for example. you've got some great song writers, a couple of amazing voices, and people who can seriously make you piss your pants laughing. i see what you mean though.. the people you listed are known more for their pretty faces than how well they do their job. and it sickens me. yet, they're fun to gossip and talk about. i suppose you can call me a hypocrite. hmm overall, yeah.. i guess Asians are a bit shallow... but there's still hope for us as long as there will be some talented people in the Asian film/music industry. but you know what? many stars in North America are only known for looks too.. and aren't only seen as "teen idols that teenyboppers enjoy fawning over". so you can say the same about them. i'm really happy you described Johnny Depp as both good looking and talented. =]
lol no offence taken, Hisoka. Actually, I'm Asian myself, and I do believe that everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. =P And you're welcome, Mrs. Depp lol
What I meant to say was that I didn't take your post offensively because you are entitled to your own opinion. -cool
anthony wong, francis ng, andy lau, tony leung, lau ching wan, alex fong chung sun. just throwing some actors out there. dang almost forgot short fat man.. eric tsang some of these guys would be equivilent to the north american actor you posted.
Jimmy Lin, good looking? I don't think Asian's are any more shallow than the average population. Everyone enjoys watching good-looking people (sometimes regardless of talent), but it's the same everywhere, and not necessarily something that can be pinpointed towards Asians.
theres 2 alex fong ... one is the one ur thinking of Alex fong lik sun... and theres the old one alex fong chung sun... hehe close name
There are so many ways this can go... Quite frankly, every society has its share of "good lookin' stars" and its share of "not-that-good-looking but exude talent stars". They all have their Leo DiCaprios and their Edison Chens, while they also have their Jack Nicholsons and their Anthony Wongs. I mean you can't really say North Americans aren't shallow with all the bloody tabloids and "fashion" mags out there, covering all the pretty people of Hollywood and their lifestyles.
what pt did i have to prove?? you brought up Lindsay Lohan, n i replied that she may behave like an airhead in real life, but in movies, her acting is not bad.
I never said her acting was bad, just that she wasn't suitable for the part. And what was this all about?
okay why don't we use ROTCH as an example. do you think Liu Yi Fei was right for the role of Xiao Long Nu, and Huang Xiao Ming for Yang Gu?
