I think one good way to learn is by speaking with those that are able to speak the language well.

the trick is to read more lol. Read a wide variety of books, mark down words you dont know and use the dictionary to find out what they mean. Then use them in your everyday utterances and etc

The tv also works >.> conversation plagarism =)

i think speaking a language with people who speak it always helps. although with the amount of slang and how many people dont speak proper english (i dont :D) writing essays could be a problem etc

No! The UK for English? I think the Canadian/US accents are better (not the south accents but the CNN English or whatever is way better =]

I'm an english educated student.. I speak english with almost everyone I see.. I have read tons of books, watch tons of english movies, speak english almost with everyone.. but my english in writting is still bad.. I don't know if it's my problem or the lecturer's..

This is my first year in Uni.. and all this while, my english is not bad... I have good grades for all writing, reading, listening and speaking.. but come to University, my english just seem worst!!.. especially writing.. I always practice my writing by choosing a topic randomly to write an essay.. but come to my Uni assignments, I just can't satisfy that lecturer's request or maybe, it's my problem.. she just seem to correct each and single line I wrote.. = ="...

inventorybox, you have the same problem as me =S. Thing is, when writing on a topic, really research into something. Not only paper-wise. Try watching a video/DVD/VHS/VCD etc. on the subject and writing down fine detailed notes on them. What I've seen with many of my papers is that having a medium to strong opinion on something relating to the topic really helps.

books help too. with comprehension and all, but what i find to be most helpful is reading hard books. Find some way to enlighten yourself.

I'm American and I've studied Chinese, Japanese and French some. I don't know a lot about any of them, but enough to notice the differences in grammar. I think one of the hardest things about learning another language is the fact that we always think of it in terms of our own language. I've heard many Chinese (mostly students or former students of the ESLI program) say things like "I speak not good" (this is just an example). In Chinese the grammar would be that way, but in English it's different. In English the verb is modified, but in Chinese the adjective is modified (at least in this example. It gets tricky for Chinese since adjectives can function as verbs like in Ni hao ma?).

So I think the best way to really improve is to always be conscious of the difference in sentence structure and grammar. Think of English in terms of English and not Chinese.
