Images of Winnie the Pooh have been banned on social media sites in China after bloggers compared the cartoon character to the Chinese president Xi Jinping.

Over the weekend, Chinese censors blocked users of Chinese social media sites WeChat and Weibo from posting pictures of the bear. Bloggers had used Winnie the Pooh in poking fun at Xi's interactions with world leaders like former President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

China bans ‘illegal’ Winnie the Pooh memes due to a internet meme comparing Chinese President Xi Jinping to the slow-witted bear - @FT

Chinese bloggers have started to refer to being censored as having been "harmonised," according to the BBC.

No official explanation was given about the ban, but China isn't the first country to crack down on Winnie the Pooh. Russia banned the cartoon bear, claiming that it was "extremist" material.

I'm surprised they haven't banned wechat, with all the stuff that goes on in there.....Granted I know it's China's text app...
What else have they banned? I didn't realize but not surprised that they have banned instagram in China, I remember someone saying it was use able there...

I mean wechat is developed in China I believe (correct me if I am wrong), and China was always a controlled economy. They claim this is to "encourage" their own people to innovate, free of western influence. Funny thing is, that's when you have amazing bootlegs in Nobe (Nike) and Uncle Martian (Under Armour), or baidu vs google, facebook vs weibo, to name a few.

As for Instagram, I am unaware they are banned? but i thought a few Chinese celebrity uses instagram?

According to the article you provided it said China blocked instagram in 2014, unless I'm reading it incorrectly "The actions by the Chinese government are another setback for Facebook in a country that has been difficult for the world’s largest social network to crack. Its flagship site was blocked in 2009 after ethnic unrest in western China; Instagram followed in 2014 during protests that fall in Hong Kong." Obviously FB is blocked in China but I've heard that there is a way around it and some mainlanders have been able to do so. You're right wechat is a mainlander app :p Haha yup China I guess will be the king of KO....It's sad really if you think about it China puts all this work in reverse engineering/copying others people stuff, yet they don't have the imagination to create new things instead....

ah i missed it, good catch, but I should've known...since Facebook now owns instagram. But I agree with you, i think some celebrities bypass and uses instagram or facebook somehow. But one thing I noticed education system in both China and western is Chinese kids are bought up in a very black and white world vs the western world where we are constantly challenged to think of grey areas. I mean me growing up, most of my topics of papers has been "what's your opinion of the matter", or projects that lets me do whatever I want. That alone teaches you creativity. I think most Chinese kids, as they grow older, they live in a very strict education system and conservative, much more than us.
