After a few years in development hell, the epic film about the infamous Tang Dynasty beauty Yang Guifei is finally coming to theaters. Starring Fang Bingbing (范冰冰) as Yang Guifei, Leon Lai (黎明) as Emperor Xuanzong, Wu Chun (吳尊) as Prince Li Mao, and Joan Chen (陳冲) as Wu Huifei, Lady of the Dynasty <王朝的女人•楊貴妃> revolves around Yang Guifei and her tragic relationship with Emperor Xuanzong, The film was first announced in early 2009, but filming was pushed back to late 2011 after a British production company withdrew its investment. With Fan Bingbing, Leehom Wang (王力宏), John Lone (尊龍), and Japanese actor Shun Oguri (小栗旬) cast in the lead roles, it was said that Lady of the Dynasty—then titled Tang Crisis—would begin filming November 2011, but filming was withheld when director Kwak Jae Yong (郭在容) resigned. John Lone, Leehom Wang, and Shun Oguri ultimately left the cast due to scheduling conflicts. Production finally resumed in August 2013, with Leon Lai and Wu Chun replacing the original leads. Shi Qing (), who wrote the 1989 Zhang Yimou (張藝謀) film Codename Cougar <代號美洲豹>, was brought in as director. Lady of the Dynasty is Fan Bingbing’s second Tang Dynasty production after last year’s The Empress of China <武則天>, a television drama depicting the life of China’s only female emperor. The television drama was a popular success and became a hot topic among social media due to the amount of cleavage shown by the actresses, which pushed The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television to order the series to be re-edited, censoring the “unhealthy” scenes. Though Lady of the Dynasty will not receive the same censored treatment as The Empress of China, the amount of cleavage shown by Fan Bingbing on the film was daring, creating another buzz online. In various clips shown at the Beijing premiere recently, Fan Bingbing showed off her curvy body in tight-fitting robes while riding a horse.
