i couldn't watch it. i started watching but then i had to stop. it's a good movie but the sino-Japanese war was a very bad time period and the things those soldiers did to females was horrific. I'm glad they made a movie finally about this time period that westerners will see. to me it seems like they dont really know or care what happened during that war. i've read many history books and seen many documentaries about this time period but watching this i found to be very difficult for me. i read that people are calling this a propaganda film but to me it doesnt seem like it.

I feel very sad for what happened in China during the war but I do not blame the Japanese soldiers for what they did in China during that darkest period of Chinese history. Since I realize that they did not come to China as a tourist, they came there as a soldier to serve their country. I blame war. No war is good. War is always bad, really bad. So, please, make love and NO WAR.

Make Love hey...hehe...cool...rubber manufacturers love you for sure.

Denial, Hatred and Selfishness are the biggest hindrance of human race from having the love and peace.

We need more compassion which is the ultimate source of power for Peace...love yes love as much as you can but to make love or not depends :)

What the past is gone and must be forgiven and forgotten. Instead of harping on the past, we just see how the suffering dragon is going to put the sushi eater land to behind. The reaping of fruits with brains and hard work and not guns and metals.

Incorrect, history is bound to repeat itself for those who have forgotten.

NEVER FORGET!!! History is very important we cannot be ignorant about it. You can forgive but NEVER FORGET for the victims who endured this injustice would not like to be forgotten such way that they are not acknowledged for the hell they experienced.

Until this day, the war criminals have not been brought to justice so this essentially means the Japanese are not sorry for what their crimes.

This is Japanese imperialism. Just never forget this.... not for the revenge but we to ensure that every generation after us knows and to prevent from happening ever again.

What I find really ironic about this sort of selective history is that the greatest killers of Chinese were the Chinese themselves. However, it's easy to hate the "Japs" and "Remember Nanjing" and all. Yes, I know all that history, and I also know a lot more about how China came to be where it is today. The Emperor of Qin, almost 2000 years ago, was reputed to have slaughtered almost a half a million prisoners of war (other Chinese, if you will), in one night. Before the Japanese invaded, the KMT, Communists, and assorted warlords had been busy beheading one another for years. And look up Ling Chi, or what the westerner romanticized as the "death of a thousand cuts" in old literature. Lest people don't believe it, you can find photographic documentation on the internet. Yes, "NEVER FORGET!!!" is right. Just be careful in what one chooses to remember. As for the Japanese? Like the Chinese they're also very selective in how they "NEVER FORGET" too, choosing to remember only how they suffered at the hands of westerners.

My point is, every country is a scumbag when it comes to military invasions, and they would be loathe to ever admit it.

Me, I hate what the Japanese did simply because they altered the course of history. Had the Japanese NOT invaded, the KMT would have finally defeated the CCP, and China under Chiang would have become industrialized with modernization (during the time that Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan had become rich from industrialization). But instead, the Japanese exhausted the KMT, and right after the war was over, their CCP allies (which had been secretly holding their forces in reserve) suddenly attacked and drove out the KMT. This lead to nearly a half century of suffering for China under the leadership of Mao (ie The Great Leap Forward, 100 Flowers, Cultural Revolution, et cetera). Lest we forget, an estimated 50 MILLION Chinese die during those times. So if one decided on the lesser of two evils, 300,000 deaths in Nanjing, really pales in comparison to 50 MILLION that the Chinese did to themselves. The Japanese fault was, that they nudged history in the wrong direction. This, I will never forget.

Sorry, but I beg to differ. Serving one's nation is joining its military to fight enemy troops. Murder, rape, and pillage are still considered to be war crimes.

That said, if one takes time to read Japanese history during those times, there are many helpful kernels of "truths" that can be derived. Turn of the century Japan was internally roiled by political infighting, with the aggressive militaristic factions eventually taking over their government. The military was frankly just as cruel to it's own soldiers and civilians, forcing those who didn't want to fight to become killers or else they would be arrested or worse. Contrast this to how disciplined Japanese imperial troops behaved during the Boxer rebellion, and WW1; and it's clearly evident that those cruel behaviors aren't intrinsically Japanese, but fell onto their leadership at the time. During much of the period before WW2, all of Japan was consumed by fear mongering "either us or them" racist types, which eventually drove their country into a war that was not only ill advised, but which morally and financially bankrupt their nation. Even school teachers at the time, were told to instruct their students that Chinese were dogs, and were inferior, and that they needed Japanese guidance. A similar phenomena is now occurring in madrassas (or fundamentalist religious Islamic schools) which instruct their students to hate the west, the US, and all Americans. My point is, all people can be indoctrinated to behave in certain ways, even the Chinese. Case in point: I remember once walking in Shanghai, right after China opened up and overseas Chinese were allow to go there. I was walking down the street and a smiling old man approached me, asking me to help him out with some spare change. I replied to him in English that I didn't speak Shanghainese... Well, the old crone suddenly soured, his face immediately contorted into the most hideously evil look. He spat on the ground at my feet and shouted, "Die, you filthy Yankee dog!!" and stomped off. Of course, I didn't understand a word he said until my wife translated for me afterwards. Hence, here was a nice elderly Chinese panhandler, asking for money, who's knee jerk reflex was to spit on the ground upon hearing words spoken in that "hated English" of America, something that he was probably preconditioned to do for years by communist political education.

So, what do you think my Shanghai friend would have done had China invaded a technologically backward US, after American troops had fled, and he was in a town full of defenseless American civilians? Would he become an active willing participant in war crimes?

Mahatma Gandhi said: "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

Jesus said: "You have heard that it was said:"An eye for an eye".But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, offer the left one as well" Matt 5:38-39

I said: WAR is stupid and MAN MADE ARMAGEDDON.

Japan had the lesson of double A...so that is the end.
What would apologies do: Bring back the dead? Give back the virginity of those raped? Regain back the wisdom of those went psycho? Bring back happiness to broken families? Rebuilding back demolished buildings/homes?
    The answer obviously is NO.
Every game of a chess, is ended with pieces taken off the board...so is the world.
New century...new game of chess...with new pieces.
The latest is a game of economy...no more WAR.

Very good point of view and I'm absolutely agreed with you. Have you ever heard the Japanese require the American to apologize for giving them the double A. Never.

Please, tell me any war, from the past to the present, without war crimes. Invaders did barbaric things to the people they'd invaded. No doubt about it. As I said they did not come there as a tourist, they came there to invade, to destroy, to kill. War always barbaric, it changed our character as a human being to a evil, a monster. That why I call people to make love, not make war.
