Wong Yuk-san directs this acclaimed melodrama about a pair of girls struggling to stay true to themselves and each other in the face of tradition. The film is set in the Mainland village of Hui An, which still observes an ancient custom in which a wife is only allowed to see her spouse three times a year until she gives birth to a son. Hsiu (Winnie Lau Siu-wai) and Hui-hua (Vivian Chan Tak-yung) are teenage girls who, viewing their future with considerable trepidation, vow to be friends forever. After viewing her brother's brutal, thoughtless treatment of his beautiful, obedient wife, Hsiu has vowed to never get married and dreams about she and Hui-hua running away together. Hui-hua gets married off to a violent, womanizing oaf while Hsiu marries a kindly artist. Though Hui-hua demands a divorce, her family refuses to return her husband's dowry. A village pariah, Hui-hua is forced to hole up with Hsiu, though the latter is secretly plotting to join her husband in Shenzhen. Alone and isolated, Hui-hua's desperation inevitably leads to tragedy.
