The Warrior & The Wolf [2009][BT]

Sorry to bump a two year old thread, but I downloaded this movie today on a lark, and found it so pleasantly weird that I felt compelled to comment on it; mainly, hot steamy action with Maggie Q getting the ole in-out ¹, and repeatedly. Movie otherwise is sort of hard to follow, with rationale being somewhat along a mystical plane; ie. don't look too deeply. The links above are unfortunately dead, but the film is easily still available on Bit Torrent (where I downloaded it over about 3 hrs today) and is quick to find. It is definitely worth watching just for its visuals, even if you're scratching your head afterwards. For the sweeping scenic vistas, cinematography and action, I would give it a 4 of 5. But, for plot and or story? I give it a minus 2, LOL...

During a university visit to Hong Kong, Tian Zhuangzhuang (Springtime in a Small Town, The Go Master) remarked, in all his deadpan glory, that the editing of his film’s trailer is better than that of the actual film. Turns out he wasn’t kidding. Based on a short story by the prolific Japanese writer Yasushi Inoue, The Warrior and the Wolf sees the representative figure of China’s Fifth Generation filmmakers lose the plot, both literally and metaphorically, in a spare and rambling allegorical fable about… something that completely escapes me. Is this meant to be about the animalistic nature shared by men and wolves? Or could it really be a cautionary tale about STDs? Set in a remote desert region in ancient China but with nary a Chinese actor among its two co-stars, this erratically-realised mythical tale concerns Lu (Joe Odagiri, who – together with last year’s Dream and Plastic City – is quickly becoming the face of self-indulgent arthouse cinema), a kind-hearted warrior who is dragged through the brutality of combat. Defeated in war and stranded by a blizzard, Lu’s troops take refuge in the village of a cursed nomadic tribe called Harran. Upon finding a nameless widow (Maggie Q) hiding in the hut he lives in, Lu rapes her; but they fall in love anyway, a fact you’d have to deduct for yourself from their subsequent intimate liaisons. While its landscape shots – often dazzlingly captured under twilight – are visually intoxicating, The Warrior… fails on the most basic levels: its fragmented narrative is dramatically ineffective and emotionally barren. When the widow finally breaks the news that, uh-oh, they’re both turning into wolves due to a curse that forbids Harran people to make love with outsiders, things take a metaphysical turn. On paper, Tian’s film is a haunting fantasy on passion and violence; in reality, the film plays like the non-thinking man’s Woman in the Dunes: you have the sand dunes, the erotic reverie, and, in place of the philosophical musings, a pair of copulating wolves. There were multiple sex scenes with Maggie Q that raises very politically incorrect controversy. Over the course of several scenes, she is repeatedly raped, so often it then seems that she begins to enjoy it; at first she tries to fight him off, but then later she obviously becomes very much a willing participant. This sort of macho and warped portrayal of sexual assault calls into question of just how the filmmaker views women and the crimes against them; his film appears to suggest that sexual assault may be justifiable and ultimately vindicated because the woman will eventually come to "enjoy" it. Additionally, one of the scenes has a very brief topless shot too, if you're into that sort of thing, LOL... At any rate the tale is about how the couple is mystically transformed into wolves that takes vengeance against their antagonists.

As for Turbobenx's (the OP) pictures that he has with the thread starter, I have no idea what that means; there's a view of someone's loft, some poultry and a car up on lift, LOL... I can honestly attest to the fact that none of those things were in the actual movie.
