*Film & trailer has nudity, viewers beware* Just about a shoo-in for Hong Kong's most unexpected film of 2008, City Without Baseball stars the real-life members of the Hong Kong Baseball Team in a daring, baring drama about baseball dreams, urban soul searching, and tangled relationships. Baseball is a nary-followed sport in Hong Kong and many locals don't know that the city actually has an official baseball team. In fact, when promotion posters for City Without Baseball showed up in Hong Kong, many people initially thought the film was Japanese. But City Without Baseball is most definitely a Hong Kong film, albeit one that completely defies expectations with its baseball player cast, sexual themes, postmodern musings, and full-frontal nudity scenes. The members of the Hong Kong Baseball Team, who signed on to City Without Baseball in hopes of generating interest in the sport and the team, deliver brave, eyebrow-raising performances. Blurring the line between fact and fiction, the players use their real names in the film, and many of their baseball stories and experiences, as well as real game footage, are integrated into the film's fictional narrative. Though director Lawrence Lau (My Name is Fame) shares billing, City Without Baseball is mainly a labor of love from first-time director Scud who also wrote and produced the film. Beginning with the fresh arrival of Taiwan coach John Tai, City Without BaseballWhispers and Moans), while insecure rookie pitcher Ron (Ron Heung) struggles with a whole laundry list of relationship and identity problems including spats with teammates, an unfaithful girlfriend (Gia Lin, The Pye-Dog), and ambiguous feelings for Chung. Here's a Torrent for a 2 GB Blue Ray Rip. Note: the torrent file contains three *.srt subtitles; one English, and supposedly one each for Chinese traditional & simplified text. However, the Chinese files were saved as unconverted gibberish and as such, both are not readable. The English subs are not stellar, but readable. The thing that got me about this flick was the brief but full frontal male nudity; while this may be relatively common for European cinema, it's decidedly rare to see such things in Asian film. ie. The first thing the missus asked was, is this a 'gay' themed story? LOL... But frankly, the film did delve into all sorts of social issues, homosexuality self discovery only being one of them, along with suicide, depression, self worth, and interpersonal conflicts; all surrounding a mediocre baseball team that seemed to be held together purely from their unabashed love of an almost unknown sport for that part of the world. The film takes off in so many directions that it's hard to really pin down what exactly the director is trying to say, except that, behind a thin curtain of baseball, there seems to be a lot of barely concealed pain just under the surface for everyone concerned. Perhaps this was the film's biggest purpose; to let people know that there's an awful lot of unseen pain in their company.
